Complete Orthofoto System

The orthofoto UAV SIRIUS I manufactured in Germany by MAVinci is a fixed wing UAV with about 1.6 m wingspan and less than 3 kg take off weight. It is mainly used for the following applications.

Documentation and Representation of:
  • Urban residential districts
  • Construction sites
  • Disaster areas
  • Crop and forest damages
Survey of:
  • Development areas
  • Meadows and fields
  • Waste disposal sites
  • Stone quarries

The area that can be covered during one flight with SIRIUS I depends on the Ground Sampling Distance (GSD: size of area represented by each pixel in a digital photo): Due to the low flight altitude high resolutions of 2-10 cm GSD are typically achieved. In one 40 min flight one can cover:

In case of computation of orthofotos:

  • 500 ha at 10 cm GSD
  • 150 ha at 2 cm GSD

In case of computation of digital elevation model/true orthofoto

  • 130 ha at 10 cm GSD
  • 45 ha at 2 cm GSD

Mission Workflow

Our system was especially designed to be used by anyone who does not have any experience with UAVs or model airplanes so far. Plan the flight by using the MAVinci Desktop flight planning software. The flight starts after the flightplan was transferred to the UAV.

Anyone is able to handle our UAV: For takeoff, the user has to switch on the autopilot and throw it in the air. During the flight the UAV follows autonomously a track that was planned before takeoff. The on board camera takes images automatically and the accomplished pictures is stored in an on board memory. After the flight the single pictures are postprocessed to one large image.

At the end of the mission the UAV lands automatically or in autopilot supported assisted mode.
